How to play pickleball?
The rules - simplified
-
The track
Size : The court measures 6.1 meters in width and 13.41 meters in length, equivalent to a badminton doubles court.
Net : The net is 86 cm high in the middle and 91 cm at the sides - SEE THE NET HERE
Non-volley zone ("the kitchen") : An area 2.13 meters from the net on both sides where it is not permitted to hit the ball directly into the air (volley).
-
Equipment
Bat : Made of wood, plastic or composite materials with a maximum length of 43.2 cm and width of 21.6 cm. - SEE BAT HERE
Ball : A lightweight plastic ball with holes, approximately 7.4 cm in diameter and weighing about 25 grams. Indoor balls have 26 holes while outdoor balls have 40 smaller holes - SEE BALLS HERE
-
Game progress
Number of players : Can be played as singles (one against one) or doubles (two against two).
The serve - Escape serve: Must be performed underhand with contact below waist level, in a forward and upward motion.
The serve - Drop serve: The ball must be dropped naturally, and hit the floor once before hitting the serve.
The serve continues: The server must stand behind the back line and serve diagonally to the opponent's service court. The ball must be longer than the kitchen line, otherwise the serve is too short. Each server has only one serve attempt, and may continue the serve as long as the duel is won.
Double-bounce rule : After the serve, the ball must bounce once on the receiver's side and once on the server's side before it can be volleyed.
Non-volley zone : Players may not hit a volley while standing in or entering the "kitchen". At no time may a player finish (e.g.) by smashing into the kitchen. This will also be a foul regardless of whether the ball is settled - for example, bouncing twice.
-
Point counting
Scoring : Only the serving team can score points.
Set : Usually played to 11 points, where you must win by at least 2 points.
Fault : Occurs when a serve lands outside the opponent's server's court, the ball is in the net, the ball is out of bounds, or the non-volley zone rule is violated.
